  • Matsukawa Onsen Matsukawaso
    Offered
Discover a variety of unique bathing experiences unlike anything you’ve seen before!

Matsukawaso is a traditional Japanese ryokan that has been used for generations as a place to recover from injuries and sickness. The geothermal waters from this sulfur spring are milky white, and said to contain healing properties. People would often stay here for extended periods to restore themselves to full health.

Located in the Matsukawa Gorge, at the edge of the Towada Hachimantai National Park, the only sounds you’ll hear are the river flowing by and the song of the birds that inhabit the forest. Staying at this inn, you can escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
One thing that you won’t want to miss during your stay here is the special open-air bath that overlooks the Matsukawa River. They sell little pitchers of sake and cups with a platter that you can take with you into the bath.

Sake Experience at Matsukawa Onsen Matsukawaso

Imagine sitting outside in a hot spring bath, gazing at the snow-covered landscape, sipping sake from a cup on a platter floating in the waters. This is one of the very few places remaining in Japan where this is still possible. (Also, it’s a mixed bath, so you could come with your spouse or partner.)
There’s also a place right next to the open-air bath to make onsen tamago, eggs boiled in hot springs waters. Eggs are sold at the ryokan- and the hot springs really give them great flavor. Try out the local tradition of eating a boiled egg after a hot bath here!
