Currently, about 98% of the lacquer used in Japan is from foreign countries. Appi-nuri uses lacquer from Iwate, which is now extremely rare.
This makes traditional craft items that emit a soft luster that is unique to Japanese lacquer. The Appi Urushi Studio is working to continue the traditional lacquer culture of Hachimantai, Iwate. Learn about the history of lacquer and its craftsmanship under the guidance of lacquer artisans at the workshop. There is an activity after the lecture where you can paint chopsticks or a plate with lacquer in the artisan’s workshop.
